Opinion
I confess, I am that irritating troublemaker who cannot allow anyone to quote figures without adding them up myself to see if they make sense.
Our editor is making much of the fact that 11,000 scientists signed up to a climate emergency declaration. Hmm, let’s see. According to official figures,
NZ has approximately 11,000 scientists. That’s with a population of a bit over four million. But the world population is about eight billion, so assuming similar rates the number of scientists in the world is about, um, 2000 times 11,000, or twenty two million. Aw, NZ is relatively highly educated, let’s call it 11 million to be safe.
So I am supposed to be impressed that one in every one thousand scientists signed up to this emergency?
Um, sorry, not impressed.
