New lighting under shop verandas in the city will be trialled to investigate a long-term solution to improve visibility and security.
Tairawhiti Roads general manager Dave Hadfield says the LED lights will be mounted vertically against existing light poles to provide quality lighting both across shop frontages and the footpath.
They will be installed in Gladstone Road between Peel and Lowe streets initially, to test the effectiveness of the light spread and compatibility with security cameras.
“We’ve been under way with the first stage to upgrade CBD street lights to LED, which provided the basis of lighting while a suitable pole-mounted solution was found” says Mr Hadfield.
Fixed to the back of the poles and facing the footpath, the lights have a stainless-steel mounting system and are capable of withstanding a hammer impact. The luminaire are 16 watt, cost less than $300 each and have a 22-year life expectancy. The cover is diffused so there is no glare.
