Birmingham, known affectionately as Brum, welcomed the world to its city today as the 22nd Commonwealth Games were officially opened.

An entertaining opening ceremony at the 32,000 capacity Alexander Stadium raised the curtain on a 12-day extravaganza of sport featuring over 4500 athletes in 19 sports, vying for 1875 medals.

Those who flicked on the TV to watch the opening were treated to a story depicting Birmingham's history, famous people, inventions, industry and social fabric.

Who knew that Birmingham gave the world the photocopier, bicycle bell, roller skates, whistle, X-ray scanner, windscreen wipers, camera and vacuum cleaner?

The crowd, including Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, who officially opened the Games in the Queen's absence, were treated to a spectacle of sound, colour and movement over two hours . . .
