THE last Swim the Distance challenge to be held at the existing Olympic Pool has wrapped up.

The event challenges individuals and teams to swim 45.5km — the distance from Gisborne to Mahia.

“In total we had 206 taking part in the event,” said Sport Gisborne Tairāwhiti Swim the Distance event adviser Debbie Hutchings.

“The 2022 Recreational Services Swim the Distance Challenge can now be written into the history books as the last event to be held in the 50m pool.

“With over 7500km collectively swum over the eight-week challenge period, many new friendships were made and some incredible personal success stories emerged. It is a fantastic team/group challenge and was a great success.

“We are really looking forward to being able to offer the 2023 Swim the Distance Challenge in the new Kiwa Pools complex and have our community continue to challenge themselves in an aquatic setting.”

Andy Destounis finished with the most kms (273km) and Wright Team Inc took top spot in the team challenge (583.6km).

The winner of the major spot prize was Hamish Anderson who won an Apple watch.
