House fire in Valley Road

Fire broke out at the back of a Valley Road home yesterday afternoon at around 4.30pm but no one was injured from the incident.

A resident in the Mangapapa area recalls hearing three loud explosions and looked out of their window to see black smoke billowing out of a property.

The blaze occurred in a lean-to attached to the kitchen of the house located in the Valley Road-James Street area.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Gisborne crews attended.

They managed to contain the fire and damage was confined to the back area of the home.

The fire did not spread further, thanks to the quick thinking of an occupant of the house, who dialled 111 and closed other doors inside the house before evacuating.

Two fire engines were called out and two hoses were used to put out the blaze.

It took just under two hours to fully extinguish the fire.
