FENZ called to mill and cars

FIREFIGHTERS were called to the Juken New Zealand mill last night after a small smouldering fire started in a sawdust silo.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent three appliances and a tanker to the plant at around 10.25pm.

The crews were on site for about three hours.

“The fire had potential to become more serious but we were able to locate the source and put it out before that point,” a senior firefighter said.

“The fire was contained to the silo and there was no damage caused.”

Fire and Emergency NZ was also called out twice last night to car fires.

The first was in Atkinson Street in Riverdale at 6.30pm, and the second in Worsley Street in Kaiti at 2am this morning.

Firefighters said in both cases the vehicles had been parked in the street, and both vehicles were burnt out.

Police have inquiries under way into both incidents.
