FREE desexing of dogs classified as menacing under the Dog Control Act is available in Gisborne for a limited time.
Gisborne District Council is also offering free microchipping and a $1 registration fee for first-time registrations.
“We have government funding to pay to have your dog neutered or spayed bya local vet, free of charge until the end of July or while funds last,” a council spokesperson said.
Dog breeds classified as menacing include American Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Brazilian Fila, Perro de Presa Canario and Japanese Tosa.
“The funding is a good opportunity for owners of menacing dogs to have their pets desexed for free before a law change makes desexing mandatory.”
By law, the council is also required to seize and impound menacing dogs not compliant with the Act and owners could be fined up to $3000. The initiative is part of the national strategy to reduce the risk and harm of dog attacks.
