THE prosecution of a Ruatoria dog owner after a serious attack is a first for Gisborne District Council and should be a warning to other dog owners, said chief executive Judy Campbell.
She was commenting on a report giving an overview of enforcement in all areas of council jurisdiction over
the past three months.
The report said the prosecution for the Ruatoria attack was the first dog-related serious offence the council has prosecuted.
“In its history, Gisborne District Council has never prosecuted anybody for dog attacks and you all know we have an issue with dogs,” she said.
“By comparison, Napier has prosecuted 11 so far this year. This is to signal that we are taking enforcement seriously.”
