BY day he is a software engineer in the medical device industry but the rest of the time Auckland-born Justin Chuk is a violinist who has amassed orchestral and chamber music experience in New Zealand and overseas.
This week though he is focused on the Gisborne International Music Competition, which
began yesterday. Chuk chose from a selection of pieces by Bach, Paganini, Schubert and Sibelius to perform in the first round of the competition.
The double bass is not an instrument that features a lot in the Gisborne International Music Competition but Sydney musician Sebastian Pini, who has studied the instrument with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 2006, performed pieces yesterday from a selection made up of works by Makhosvii, Gliere, Bottesini and Rota.
For Christchurch tuba player Nicholas Scott, a range of works by composers such as Bach, Bloch and Duda were among his choices yesterday. Having begun his musical trajectory on euphonium, Scott found he was more at home with the tuba.
After some formative musical training with a New South Wales county brass band. Scott is back in Christchurch where he plays in the New Zealand Army Band.
