More than two decades after they boarded together as teenagers in Auckland, Otumoetai-based coach Jason Young and former New Zealand Davis Cup player and captain Glenn Wilson are back together again.
The pair won the national vets doubles recently and will team up for the 2011 ITF seniors world team/individual championships.
The team championships for Young's 40-45 years division are on February 21-26 in Timaru, followed by the individuals from February 27-March 7.
Young, Wilson and Waikato's Steven Pett will represent New Zealand in their grade. Mount Maunganui's Quentin Maisey is in the men's 55s, while coach Peter O'Dea will contest the 50s grade.
Young, 41, was last year part of a four-strong New Zealand men's team that won the inaugural Oceania championships in Noumea.
"Glenn and I boarded together at Auckland Grammar when we were both in the New Zealand BP [junior] elite squad as teenagers."
Young, who also won the national vets mixed double titles with Linda Seabourne and was beaten by Wilson 4-6 7-6 7-6 in the singles, said the week-long teams championship could be gruelling.
"There will be at least one tie [two singles and doubles] each day, possibly two, but Glenn and I play good doubles together and I've come out of summer fairly fit."
Young will stay on for the individual competition, playing singles and linking with Wilson for doubles. The championships will be spread between Christchurch, the Ashburton and Timaru courts.
