The plethora of points and the wide expansive play may have abated somewhat in Baywide club rugby but the drama and thrilling finishes are back with a vengeance.
Saturday's round of matches saw five of the six section one games go right down to the wire, with only Whakarewarewa's 25-5 defeat of Kahukura having any semblance of comfort to it.
The biggest shock came at Te Ariki Park where hosts Rangataua came within a whisker of ending Mount Maunganui's easy stroll through the first round. Rangataua kicker Shane Ririnui pushed a last-minute conversion wide, unable to seal a remarkable draw, and Mount escaped with a 16-14 win.
For a side that has averaged 55 points a game in the first four rounds, it was something of a wakeup call, especially when Rangataua were without Maori All Black Matua Parkinson.
For the second week in a row, the brave men of Te Puna were beaten in the final seconds of the game, losing 21-20 to Whakatane Marist in Whakatane.
In the dying seconds of the game Whakatane centre Chris Barron, who has shifted to the Bay from Manawatu this season, crashed over the line for his second try of the match.
Richard Preston's match-winning conversion sailed high and true between the posts. Earlier tries to Daniel Schuster, Hayward Kuka and Thomas Gardiner had given the visitors a seemingly impenetrable lead.
At Tauranga Domain, hosts Tauranga Sports emerged with a 24-16 win over Rangiuru, although it was only a second-half double from elusive centre Michael Petersen that completed the win.
Rangiuru etched out a 13-7 halftime lead with the wind but Tauranga's second-half advantage was punctured abruptly when first-five Robert Moon limped off with ligament damage in his ankle.
Moon's direction and control was sorely missed and although the match became something of an intriguing arm-wrestle, it seemed like both sides were suffering torn biceps and limp wrists.
Rangiuru drop out of the top-eight but their was significance in Saturday's with the first full game back for the inspirational Paul Tupai and fellow flanker Andrew Leota was away.
New Canadian import Brodie Henderson scored his third and fourth tries in just his second appearance for Te Puke Sports, helping them to an equally dramatic 30-24 win over Rotoiti, who have now lost their past two games.
Te Puke's Tongan connection, centre Toutai Telefoni, scored the other while first-five Murray Williams added three conversions and three penalties as Te Puke moved up to fourth on the Baywide table. The other game with a gripping finale was Kawerau's 7-3 defeat of Waikite, with player-coach Les Shine scoring the lonely try of the match as the home side picked up their first win.
In section two, the three Western Bay teams all posted victories. Arataki remain unbeaten after beating Eastern Pirates 31-0 while Judea accounted for Opotiki 40-19.
Baywide debutantes Papamoa grabbed their third win of the season when they beat Matata 27-17.
