Weather is forecast to be fine for most of New Zealand this weekend before rain and wind set in next week.

South Islanders were in for a fine weekend, with high cloud and some rain for parts of the North Island said Metservice Meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

"Today is a pretty fine day for most of the South Island, in the North Island there is a lot more high cloud around and there is also just isolated showers about."

Parts of Northland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay could expect rain, he said.

"The rest of the North Island is dry but there is quite a bit of cloud around."

Tomorrow appeared similar, but rain would likely sink south from Northland and hit the northern parts of Auckland.

Mr Glassey said the weather would get much more unsettled next week.

"A front is moving up the South Island on Monday, which is likely to bring heavy rain to Fiordland and Westland. We will also be getting some more strong winds over the lower South Island on Monday.

"The week is looking fairly unsettled for the first part of the week over the country - there is a few different fronts moving through over the first half of the week.

"Towards the end of the week it is looking more settled after a ridge of higher pressure moves over the country."
