It's not everyday Tiki Taane drops into a kindergarten to perform a few tunes.

Yesterday Gate Pa Kindergarten was treated to a visit by the Kiwi musician for its open day, a day for the community to see what the kindy was all about.

"Tiki has been so wonderful to us. We met him last year for a fundraiser and then called him up again this year, and he said of course," head teacher Claire Davison said.

The Family Fun Open Day was a way for the kindergarten to connect with the community, she said.

"We've been here for nearly 40 years in this community, this same building.

"Our goal is to provide high quality childhood education and make it accessible for all children," Ms Davison said.

Last year, as part of the New World Cash Grab, the kindergarten asked Tiki Taane to be their celebrity guest to grab as much cash as he could.

He nabbed $1250 for the kindergarten which they used for new music equipment.

"The children love Tiki's music; we always use his songs for music lessons and games," Ms Davison said.

Taane said he had the time to pop in to perform a few songs - "it's something real simple to do ... and it feels like a real nice thing to do".

He said the cash grab was one of the coolest things he had done in a long time, grabbing as much money as he could in a tube for the kindergarten.
