A Tauranga car fire is being treated as suspicious.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said they were called to a car fire on 21st Ave, Gate Pa about 10.20pm yesterday.

The fire was out when crews arrived but was being treated as suspicious, he said.

A police spokesman said they were also called to the scene.

"The cause of the fire appears to be suspicious and police inquiries are continuing," he said.
