Tauranga barge capsizes, salvage to take some time

A tipped barge at Tauranga’s Bridge Marina could take some time to salvage, a council says.

At about 2.15pm on Monday, Bay of Plenty Regional Council staff were notified that a 30m-long barge at the marina had capsized, leaving a crane lying in the water, the council said on Tuesday.

A spokesperson said today that the council’s role was to monitor and assist. “The responsibility for containment and recovery sits with the contractor putting together the salvage operation.”

The contractor’s divers were completing an inspection.

A 30m-long barge operating at the Bridge Marina tipped on its side, resulting in a crane lying in the water.

“Using video and photo from the scene, they develop a plan for the safe recovery of the barge and crane.”

They will also inspect and report back on any leakage risks.

Absorbent booms have been placed in the area to collect diesel and oil.

The council said about 10 litres of diesel leaked into the harbour.

The spokesperson said as the tides and currents change, small pockets of diesel trapped in the wreck may surface and appear as a sheen.

“At this stage, there is no further leakage.

“Marina security is making regular inspections in the area, noting that the salvage ... could take some time.

“They will need a large crane and location to remove the parts from the water. This will also likely involve a commercial dive team.”

Boats and other craft were still advised to stay clear of the area for safety reasons.
