Tauranga students have excelled at bowling tournaments in the past week.

Tauranga Boys' Nick Tomsett (skip), Andre Hudson (third), Nathan Arlidge (second) and Cliff Webber (lead) excelled as a team, showing excellent control of weight and line to comprehensively win the Opt Classic at the Tauranga South Bowling Club last weekend.

Nick, Andre and Nathan are also into the finals of the Champion of Champions Triples, and lost by only a few shots in the finals of the Champion of Champions Fours a week earlier.

The Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls Championships for 2017 were held at the Arawa Bowling Club in Rotorua on Tuesday.

Tauranga Girls' College students performed well. The senior girls' pair of skip Dannika Worthington, 15, and her lead Jordan Gilby, 15, won the bronze medal after losing their semifinal by one shot.

Tauranga Boys' bowlers also enjoyed some success. Anthony Ouellet won the singles championship without losing a game, but had a tough contest in the final, winning by one shot. He won the gold medal for a second consecutive year.

The pairs silver medal was won by skip Liam Williams and his lead Zac Paterson. They started playing and learning the game only this season at the Gate Pa Bowling Club.

Joshua Badshad was the Tauranga Boys' reserve singles player and has been playing for only six months. He benefited greatly from the experience.
