State Highway 29 reopens: Truck carrying chlorine breaks down in Lower Kaimai

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said crews were called about 9.55am.

State Highway 29 has reopened following a truck breakdown on the Lower Kaimai.

Emergency services were called to an “incident involving a chemical” about 9.55am, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said.

Earlier, a police spokesperson told the Waikato Herald a truck had broken down on the Kaimai Range.

“The truck is understood to contain chlorine, which is reacting due to the inclement weather.”

SH29 was closed between Valley View Rd and Soldiers Rd but has since reopened.

NZTA earlier said: “A truck carrying a hazardous substance understood to be chlorine, has been forced to stop for safety reasons.”
