Spongedrop Cakery has just celebrated its first birthday. Photo/supplied

Last week Spongedrop Cakery celebrated its first birthday. On Thursday, our bricks and mortar space officially turned one.

That's one whole year of creating cupcakes, macarons, birthday cakes, wedding cakes, sweet treats, coffee and tea from our gorgeous little cake shop for
all of our amazing customers.

As cliche as it sounds, it has been a whirlwind of a year. I have learnt so much, more than I could ever appreciate before heading into this venture and I have met some wonderful people who are now regulars in my life.

There have been some hard times that challenged me (come to think of it, new challenges arise each week!) but the entire journey, from way back when we were searching for a location, to today, when you can find our cakes at both the shop at 10 Salisbury Ave and at our stall in The Little Big Markets, has been one ultimately epic adventure. Would I change a few things? Yes. But would I change the experience as a whole? No way.

Spongedrop as a business has been operating for almost four years now. As we enter into our second year at the shop, where I took the risk financially, physically, mentally and emotionally to bring you something that I was so passionate about, I want to give the biggest thanks to everyone who has supported me and helped along the way.

To my staff who are just the best! Cassie, Oleana, Jess, Gemma and Holly are a dream team and I'm so glad they are part of the Spongedrop family.

To my partner, family and friends who accept the all- encompassing world of Spongedrop and tolerate my madness. And of course to all our supporters, I thank you for embracing what we do, for knowing how to enjoy the sweet things in life (literally) and for being your friendly, enthusiastic selves. We love seeing your happy faces.

With Christmas approaching, it can be a hectic time for everyone. This time last year I was frantically trying to learn how to run a shop and my Christmas spirit seriously waned.

This year, I am going to get it back on track and roll with the Christmas craziness. Expect to see plenty of festive treats in-store and be warned, our favourite Christmas tunes will be playing on repeat.

Happy holidays everyone and thank you again for helping a local girl to fulfil her cake dreams.
