"I have been working towards getting to the World Summer Games since I started Special Olympics New Zealand back in 1992. It has been one of my life goals," she says.
It is a goal that her family, fiance and the Special Olympics team are proud she is fulfilling.
Oliphant has been involved in Special Olympics for 17 years and has been bowling for 12 years.
He was a standout for the Tauranga team at the National Summer Games last year, contributing 200 points to help bring home the overall gold medal.
"I'm looking forward to extending my experience of tenpin bowling, and travelling and meeting other athletes," he said.
Athletes, managers, coaches and support staff met in Wellington over Labour weekend for training in aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, equestrian, golf, powerlifting and ten pin bowling, uniform fitting, and health checks.
"I am delighted how everyone has come together and is working so well towards a common goal," said delegation head Max Brooking.
"In just one day I am very pleased to see our group acting like a team. Many friendships have already been developed and the way the team has been working on their training bodes well for some great results in LA."
Further camps are planned over the next six months.
Special Olympics New Zealand launched its "Sponsor an Athlete" campaign this month to help raise funds for the team's trip.
