Smoke alarms are being heralded for saving the lives of a houseful of sleeping people in the wee hours of today.
A simple pot on the stove filled the Fraser St home with smoke when the person who put it on to cook fell asleep.
Smoke alarms sounded and Greerton firefighters were called to the house at 2.41am.
Senior station officer Nigel Liddicoat said they arrived to find everyone from the smoke-logged house had escaped unharmed and had already removed the pot and turned the power off to the stove.
"Fortunately the smoke alarm activated, alerting the occupants by the time we got there. Smoke alarms saved the day," he said.
