A ward at Tauranga Hospital was closed over the weekend after a small norovirus outbreak and three people are still isolated awaiting final clearance.
Bay of Plenty District Health Board infection control specialist Dr Kate Grimwade said the outbreak had now been contained and wards were open and running normally.
"One ward was closed over the weekend as a precautionary measure," she told the Bay of Plenty Times.
The first suspected case was presented on Friday.
"And our usual infection control measures were put in place for incidents of this type, including the isolation of those patients infected," Dr Grimwade said.
"There are currently three patients isolated in one four-bed bay awaiting final clearance."
She said there was clearly a diarrhoea-type illness circulating in the community at the moment and her advice to the public was to be vigilant about hand hygiene, including regular hand washing with soap and water.
"Also, anyone who has diarrhoea or vomiting symptoms should not go to work or school, or visit patients in hospital, due to the risk of infecting others. If you are feeling unwell you should contact your GP."
Last week there was an outbreak of suspected norovirus at Whakatane Hospital and Whangarei Hospital was also dealing with the highly contagious bug.
