Curtain Bank coordinator Shelley Clark and volunteer Dot Hodgson are accepting donations of curtains in good, clean condition.

Curtain Bank coordinator Shelley Clark and volunteer Dot Hodgson are accepting donations of curtains in good, clean condition.

The Western Bay of Plenty Curtain Bank is gearing up for winter as it prepares to help people stay warmer during the colder months.

Originally established in 2008 by Energy Options to provide a healthier environment for those in need, running operations have recently been taken over by the Red Cross, but the objectives remain the same.

Red Cross service centre co-ordinator Jan Pryce says its aim is to keep homes and families warmer and healthier in winter, reduce energy wastage, and provide comfort, privacy and security.

"This fits in with our mission statement of Improving the Lives of Vulnerable," she says.

Curtain Bank co-ordinator Shelley Clark says a lot of homes do not have curtains and the service is needed.

On average it deals with about three to four referrals a week, she says.

It networked with a large number of agencies that referred people to the Curtain Bank.

Once documentation was filled out, including window measurements, orders were fulfilled.

Donations of curtains, tape and hooks are also gratefully received, Shelley says.

However it is important the curtains are clean and mould-free.

"It doesn't matter whether the pattern is dated or the fabric is a bit faded, they just need to be nice and clean."

Curtain Bank volunteer Dot Hodgson used to sew curtains professionally and says it's her way of giving back to the community.

"I do various voluntary jobs and this was something else I thought I could do. It doesn't take long and it's good value."

A keen sewer, Dot says she has always made her own drapes and enjoys utilising her skills and lending a hand.
