Two people were trapped after a crash involving two cars in Paengaroa.

A police spokeswoman said police were called to reports of a crash on State Highway 2, between the Tauranga Eastern Link roundabout and Wilson Rd, just after 6pm yesterday.

This morning, a police spokeswoman said two people were trapped and had to be freed by emergency services.

The road was initially blocked but has since been cleared.

A St John spokesman said three patients were taken to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance.
