Motorcyclist seriously injured in State Highway 2 crash in Edgecumbe

A motorcyclist has been left in a serious condition after a crash at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Western Drain Rd in Edgecumbe late this afternoon.

Police said the collision involving a car and a motorcycle was reported at 4.55pm.

Police said traffic management is in place and SH2 is blocked between the Putiki Rd and SH30 intersections while cordons are being set up.

Motorists were asked to delay travel if possible.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Gareth Lewis said crews were called just before 5pm to a crash involving a car and a motorbike.

Two fire engines and a support vehicle responded.

Lewis said firefighters removed a patient from the car on arrival and stayed on scene, assisting police and ambulance staff.
