Anybody planning to travel north this Thursday are being warned of a road closure through the Karangahake Gorge.

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge will be closed to all traffic from 9pm Thursday April 9 until 5.30am the next day.

The closure is due to contractors resurfacing a narrow 200m section of the gorge road between Paeroa and Waihi, near the Karangahake Reserve.

People wishing to travel between Waihi and Paeroa during the closure are urged to use an alternative route through SH25 or SH25A, however this will add about 1hr 15mins to the trip.

Motorists travelling between Tauranga and Auckland are advised to take the SH29 route over the Kaimai Range.

Stop/go traffic management will be in place from 9pm until 5.30am the following day and motorists should expect short delays.

On April 10 there will be additional work in the area near Mackaytown.
