Emergency-service workers were kept busy with a weekend that began with a crash and ended with a crash.
Te Puke St John was called to the intersection of No1 and No2 Rds where a vehicle had hit a bank about 6.15am on Saturday. The male driver, 20, was taken to Tauranga
Hospital with a minor cut to his head.
About 10.10am, a 58-year-old man walked into the path of a car at the Gloucester Rd and Girven Rd intersection in Mount Maunganui. The intersection is controlled by traffic lights and it is understood the man was walking towards Bayfair Shopping Centre.
The accident happened just metres from the Mount Maunganui St John ambulance base. The man, from Te Aroha, was taken by ambulance to Tauranga Hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
About an hour later a cyclist suffered serious facial injuries after smashing into a parked car. The 50-year-old cyclist, from Papamoa, hit the car while riding on Papamoa Beach Rd about 11.20am. The impact smashed the vehicle's back window and left the man with serious facial injuries.
Mount Maunganui St John operations team manager Gary Bishell said the cyclist was taken to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance but was later transferred to Waikato Hospital for specialist facial surgery. Mr Bishell said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Yesterday, a woman who was driving her 3-year-old daughter down Poike Rd had a head-on collision with another car.
Both mother and daughter were treated at the scene by St John ambulance paramedics but did not need hospital treatment.
However, the two occupants from the other car did. A 17-year-old Tauranga woman suffered possible seatbelt injury, causing pain to her shoulder, and a 22-year-old Tauranga man suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Tauranga Hospital.
The road was closed to one lane while tow truck and emergency service staff cleared the mess.
