An unregistered pit bull terrier has savaged a jack russell - leaving the 11-year-old dog with a badly-torn groin and puncture wounds.
The attack happened as the jack russell's owner collected her mail on Reid Rd, Welcome Bay, shortly before 5pm on Monday. The pit bull lives at a house across the road.
The woman was unable to get the pit bull off and rushed inside to call police.
Bruce Wills, Western Bay's team leader of animal services, said he received a call from police after the attack and an animal control officer visited the property yesterday.
The officer found the pit bull in the house, it was micro-chipped but its registration expired on June 30.
Mr Wills said council intended to seize the dog.
Mr Wills said the residents of the house had been looking after the dog for the past six weeks on behalf of the owner.
The animal control officer described the dog as friendly towards him.
Mr Wills said dogs needed to be under control at all times, particularly more powerful animals. "People have just got to control their dogs at all times" as they could do major damage to a small dog in a second.
The injured jack russell was treated at Beach Road Veterinary Clinic and was due home yesterday afternoon.
