An Ohauiti house caught fire on Monday night after the owner attempted to set a wasp nest alight.
When the fire got away on him he crawled into the roof space with a garden hose.
Greerton firefighter Jono Preston said firecrews were called to the Buxton Place home at 7.53pm.
Mr Preston said the man could have died.
"While the man escaped with only minor burns to this hands and arms, if the fire had flashed over him or he had been overcome by the smoke, it could have been a very different story."
Mr Preston said while the man managed to put most of the fire out there was an area about 16sq m in the bedroom that was damaged by fire, smoke and water.
Mr Preston said extermination was best left to the experts.
Tauranga Fire Service's senior station officer Nigel Liddicoat said going into the ceiling with a garden hose was a dangerous move.
"There were a myriad of possible hazards, including electrical hazards, and it wouldn't have taken much to turn into a catastrophe."
