A man suffered serious injuries after falling on to rocks near Leisure Island at Mount Maunganui.

Emergency services were called to the man about 9.30am yesterday, after reports he had become trapped on the rocks after the fall. The man was found in an area known as Castle Rock, about 200m south of Leisure Island.

Fire service shift manager Jaron Phillips said firefighters had been called to help St John staff at the scene, just off Marine Parade.

"This person has fallen on to rocks. We extricated the patient from the rocks and assisted ambulance staff."

It appeared the man suffered serious injuries from the fall, Mr Phillips said.

Mount Maunganui fire station officer Roger Pickett said they helped transfer the man on to a spinal bed and then into a Stokes Basket before transporting him to a waiting ambulance.

A St John ambulance spokeswoman said a male was taken to Tauranga Hospital with moderate injuries.

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service general manager Glenn Bradley said they also helped ambulance staff with one of their service vehicles.
