Trapped man rescued after rock fall near Leisure Is

A man has suffered serious injuries after falling onto rocks near Leisure Island at Mount Maunganui.

Emergency services were called to the man about 9.30am, after reports he had become trapped on the rocks after the fall. The man was found on an area of rocks known as Castle Rock, about 200m south of Leisure Island.

Fire Service shift manager Jaron Phillips said firefighters had been called to help St John ambulance staff at the scene, just off Marine Parade.

''This person has fallen onto rocks. We extricated the patient from the rocks and assisted ambulance staff.''

It appeared the man suffered serious injuries from the fall, Mr Phillips said.

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service general manager Glenn Bradley said they also helped ambulance staff.

Lifeguards used one of their service vehicles to help transport the man from the rocks to a waiting ambulance, Mr Bradley said.
