The iconic New Zealand jandal is about to get a whole lot bigger.
This weekend, anyone who wants to be a part of the action can join in an attempt to form the biggest jandal ever made by people on lilos.
Havaianas Lilo Challenge is back for the second year in a
row and the aim of the day is to beat the previous attempt.
Last year 240 participants hopped on their lilos and headed out from Mount Maunganui Main Beach into the ocean to form the massive lilo jandal.
This Saturday, February 12, Havaianas organisers want to up the game and have 360 people involved.
Tauranga brand manager Monique Macfarlane says, "It is just a fantastic day out and celebrating a New Zealand icon in the height of our Kiwi summer.
"Last year came together really well and proved a success so we hope to have it happen again."
Havaianas works with the Mount Maunganui Surf Life Saving team which helps structure the jandal in the water.
"The life guards are out in the water in boats and on jetskis so they can direct people and make sure everyone is safe."
Buoys will be set out and ropes connected to them so people stay together and do not drift away with the current.
A helicopter will take photos of the lilo formation.
There will also be sand castle competitions on the beach and entertainment.
Last year spaces filled up quickly due to its popularity, so Monique encourages people to register online first so they do not miss out on a spot. If that is not an option you can turn up on the day and register.
Entries cost $30 and this includes a Havaianas lilo to keep after the event. There is a minimum age of 12 for entrants due to safety requirements.
The event begins on the Mount Maunganui Main Beach at 1pm and concludes at 4pm.
