Waipa will soon welcome another great trail to the district with the Te Awamutu to Kihikihi trail route confirmed.

The 4.5km walkway and cycleway will start at Te Awamutu's Albert Park Drive and finish at Herbert Street in Kihikihi, where signage will direct users to the Kihikihi Domain and town centre.

The 2.5m wide trail has an estimated cost of $600,000 which includes concreting the path in urban areas and using crushed limestone in rural areas.

The trail will link Te Awamutu and Kihikihi, providing a key transport connection for daily school commuters as well as weekend destination cyclists.

Mayor Jim Mylchreest said council sent a strong message through its 10-Year Plan that it wants to deliver high quality trails across the district.

"We're focused on building a network of trails, connecting historic places, towns and significant features of Waipa. The trails will bring benefits from tourism spending, as well as health and recreation benefits."

Mayor Mylchreest said both council and the community have been looking forward to seeing the trail built.

"We can't wait to have a safe connection between Te Awamutu and Kihikihi for cyclists and pedestrians of all ages. It's really exciting for our communities."

The work is currently out for tender with construction planned for May/July.
As part of the 2015-25 10 year plan council set aside $1.25m for a trail between Te Awamutu and Kihikihi and investigations into a trail between Te Awamutu, Lake Ngaroto and Pirongia.
