State Highway 2 through Karangahake Gorge will be closed to all traffic from 9pm tonight until 5.30am tomorrow.

People wishing to travel between Waihi and Paeroa during this time should travel via SH25 - Waihi to Whangamata then SH25A to Kopu and rejoining SH25 to link to SH2 west of Ngatea. However, this will add about 75 minutes to the trip.

Motorists travelling between Auckland and Tauranga are advised to use SH29 over the Kaimai Range.

The closure will allow contractors to resurface a narrow, 200m section of the gorge road between Paeroa and Waihi, near Karangahake Reserve.

Residents of Waikino and Karangahake will have access to Waihi, while people in Mackaytown will have access to Paeroa during the closure.

Tomorrow (April 10) there will be additional work in the area near Mackaytown. Stop/go traffic management will be in place around the works from 9pm until 5.30am and motorists should expect delays.
