Six Tauranga men are behind bars for their parts in two separate violent robberies.

Shaun Meke Mahia, 17, Tuhukia Tysson Mahia, 18, and Matthew Grant Kingi, 27, robbed the Matua dairy on May 27.

Shaun Mahia, armed with a carjack handle, and Kingi, armed with a piece of galvanised pipe, entered the store while Tuhukia Mahia waited in the getaway car.

Shaun Mahia beat the attendant with the carjack handle during the robbery, which netted four packets of cigarettes. The trio were sentenced in Tauranga District Court, yesterday.

Judge Cameron said there was planning involved in the robbery, Shaun Mahia and Kingi both entered the shop armed while Tuhukia Mahia waited in the getaway car and both offenders wore disguises.

"You used a carjack handle which in the wrong hands is a lethal weapon," Judge Cameron said. The shop attendant was "justifiably terrified by the whole experience", he said.

Kingi was already serving a sentence of community work and supervision at the time of the robbery. He was sentenced to four years and four month's jail.

Shaun Mahia was sentenced to three years and two month's jail and Tuhukia Mahia was sentenced to two years and seven month's jail.

In a separate case, three men responsible for the aggravated robbery of the Z Service Station on 11th Ave were also jailed yesterday.

Pukawa Allan Shelford, 17, armed with a knife and Kelvin John Guttery, 20, armed with knuckle dusters, robbed the petrol station at about 10pm on June 29 while Ari Higgins, 22, waited in the car.

They demanded the till and cigarettes from the lone 18-year-old female attendant before speeding away from the scene.

Earlier in the day the trio had stolen petrol from both the 15th Ave Z Station and the Tauriko Service Station.

Judge Cameron said the attendant was "terrified" by the experience and was now uncomfortable being on her own at night.

Higgins received the longest sentence as he had prior convictions, the robbery was committed while he was on bail and he was driving while disqualified.

He was sentenced to three years and 10 months' jail.

Judge Cameron also added one month to the sentence as he was caught driving drunk two days before the robbery. His blood alcohol level was 211mg per 100ml of blood - more than double the 80mg limit.

Guttery was sentenced to three years and six months' jail.

Shelford received a sentence of two years eight months' jail.

They were each ordered to pay $172 reparation to cover the costs of the petrol stolen in the two drive-offs and the amount stolen in the robbery.
