Police are viewing CCTV footage of the Bayfair Shopping Centre carpark in an attempt to find those responsible for the brutal beating of a Tauranga teenager.
About 11.30 on Friday night, a 17-year-old Mount Maunganui College student was set upon by three men.
The teenager was punched in the face in an unprovoked attack.
He was left with a split cheek split and substantial bruising to his left cheek and mouth area.
Speaking to the Bay of Plenty Times this morning, the teen said he was shocked by the attack.
"It's really painful and it's upset me to think that this type of thing could happen here," he said.
"I never thought it would happen here and I never thought it would happen to me ... it's left me really shocked and shaken."
The teen, who did not want to be named, had been for a late night walk at the beach, mourning the death of his grandfather. He was returning home to Bayfair Estate via the front of the Bayfair carpark.
"I saw a young blonde girl, about 17 or 18, running across the carpark," the teenager said.
"She looked really upset so I asked her if she was ok but she didn't look around and kept running. Then I looked back to where she came from and I saw three shadows by the underpass [to Owens Rd]. The shadows disappeared so I thought they had gone then all of a sudden they appeared under one of the lights."
One of the three men challenged the teenager to a fight, but he refused.
"The others were egging him on, saying things like 'deck him' and 'knock him out' but I put my hands up and backed away to clearly show them that I did not want to fight, but then one of them came up and hit me in the face."
The teenager said the three men demanded money.
At the time, he did not have his wallet on him but was carrying his cellphone and sunglasses.
"I put my hand in my pocket and threw them at them and I turned around and ran toward the Bayfair roundabout," the teen said. "It was really lucky I didn't have my wallet on me but it has been a real pain not having my cellphone."
The teenager managed to flag down a passing vehicle and called police. They searched the area but the three offenders had disappeared.
Tauranga Police Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier, said the main offender was described as a male Maori or Polynesian, aged 18 to 20, with facial hair. He had short dark hair and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded sweatshirt and dark-coloured trousers.
The other two offenders were wearing similar clothes.
