Apparently, Egyptian Queen Nefertiti wore a finely woven scarf topped by a conical headdress in 1350BC - one of the first recorded moments in the history of the scarf.
Today, we wear them less as functional pieces, and more as fashion accessories.
In Ancient Rome around 10AD they were usedto keep clean rather than warm. The sudarium, as it was called, translates from Latin to English as 'sweat cloth' and was used to wipe the face and neck in hot weather.
Roman men were the first to wear them around their necks or tied to their belts.

Of course, now the pinnacle of the scarf might be one from Hermès, the global fashion brand founded in 1837 renowned for its flamboyant silk scarves, or Burberry, famous for its plaid scarves.
The ability of the humble scarf - defined as a small length or square of fabric worn around the neck or head - to add life to an outfit knows no end.
And there are a plethora of options out there in terms of patterns, fabrics, textures and colours.
Think wool scarves for winter, the pashmina, skinny silk styles, or wraps that envelope the shoulders.
Think about how your scarf might adopt a colour or pattern that's bright and makes a statement. Something that takes you out of your comfort zone and goes with everything. A scarf is a safe and comforting way to explore new trends of the season without stepping out in an entirely new outfit.
Scarves are a great way to update outfits from previous seasons.
How you tie your scarf can also change your look and adapt your outfit.
There's multiple ways and many tutorials online to show the various ways of tying your scarf effectively - everything from the French knot, double-sided twist and simple necklace, to the scarf wrap (around the shoulders for a night out) or cosy neck wrap.
