Elderly woman collapses on Leisure Island

An elderly woman who took a turn while strolling with her husband at Leisure Island this afternoon has been taken to Tauranga Hospital.

The 81-year-old woman and her 85-year-old husband reached the far end of the island when they began to head back and she collapsed about 1.30pm.

The couple did not have a cellphone but a passer by who found them called 111 and St John ambulance officers responded.

Mount Maunganui surf lifesavers were called in to help carry the woman to the ambulance.

She was taken to Tauranga Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
