New Steamers coach Clayton McMillan told the Bay of Plenty Times he was pleased a game had been allocated to the Domain as he had fond memories of captaining the Steamers to victory in the NPC Second Division final against Nelson Bays in 2000.
"Temporary stands were erected around the ground bringing supporters closer than ever to the action. It created an electric atmosphere and was very intimidating to visiting teams. A return to those fond days would be magic," he said.
But the one-off game in August is not just about rugby.
The match is part of a planned day of activities and fun for all in the downtown Waterfront area that is so close to the Domain.
Organisers are working on ideas for a themed walk to the ground in a local version of the highly successful match-day walk to Eden Park during Rugby World Cup.
Bay of Plenty Rugby, Tauranga City Council, SKY TV and the NZ Rugby Union deserve credit for combining their talents to make this day happen.
It is heartening to see how sport, business and local government have come together to create a special day that will enrich our city.
