The Tauranga Domain appears to be a viable alternative for games
Today's announcement the Bay of Plenty Steamers are to play Waikato at the Tauranga Domain on August 30 will be well received by the Western Bay rugby community.
For years there has been widespread discontent with the location of ASB Baypark Stadium and particularly the poor viewing for spectators locatedwell away from the pitch.
Supporters have given Bay of Plenty Rugby clear feedback they want to get closer to the action and create a unique home atmosphere at a smaller venue.
The picturesque Domain fits the bill perfectly. For the Waikato game temporary seating will enclose the ground and bring the capacity to a respectable 6000. With the Steamers fans right on the edge of the field, the atmosphere should be a throwback to the past glory days at the Domain where Bay of Plenty first played in 1902.
The most famous match played there was in 1971 when 23,000 people watched Bay of Plenty nearly topple the all-conquering British and Irish Lions.
New Steamers coach Clayton McMillan told the Bay of Plenty Times he was pleased a game had been allocated to the Domain as he had fond memories of captaining the Steamers to victory in the NPC Second Division final against Nelson Bays in 2000.
"Temporary stands were erected around the ground bringing supporters closer than ever to the action. It created an electric atmosphere and was very intimidating to visiting teams. A return to those fond days would be magic," he said.
But the one-off game in August is not just about rugby.
The match is part of a planned day of activities and fun for all in the downtown Waterfront area that is so close to the Domain.
Organisers are working on ideas for a themed walk to the ground in a local version of the highly successful match-day walk to Eden Park during Rugby World Cup.
Bay of Plenty Rugby, Tauranga City Council, SKY TV and the NZ Rugby Union deserve credit for combining their talents to make this day happen.
It is heartening to see how sport, business and local government have come together to create a special day that will enrich our city.
