Drowning at Papamoa beach

An elderly man has drowned at Papamoa Beach on Tuesday afternoon.
Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Lambert confirmed the death, saying it happened near the Papamoa Beach Surf Lifesaving Club.
"Guards had packed up for the day and were putting things away when they noticed a commotion on the beach,'' he said.
"They went down but no one was able to revive him.''
The incident is understood to have occurred at 3.30pm.
