As a boy scout, Ray Williams used to take part in a fundraising copper trail that would stretch round the block in Invercargill.
Now he has brought the concept to Greerton Lions.
But where the Invercargill copper trails would be made up of ha'pennies and pennies, the hope is that a 2010 version will be made up of gold and silver coloured coins.
Lions clubs across the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Coromandel are looking to raise $3 million of the $4.2 million needed to rebuild the Lions Lodge in Hamilton.
The lodge will provide free accommodation for people from around the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Coromandel regions in a home-away-from-home atmosphere, while they receive treatment for cancer at the Waikato Regional Cancer Centre.
The Greerton club has set itself a target of $15,000 for the year.
The coin drop will take place in the village square in Greerton on Friday from 9am, rain or shine, with a mosaic Ali Baba jar on hand to collect the coins in the event of rain.
Bags of fertiliser, provided by Ballance Agri Nutrients, will also be on sale at $5 as a fundraiser for the appeal.
