Rex Hewlett was one of the first people in the Western Bay of Plenty to try KFC's new Double Down burger yesterday.
The Welcome Bay man thought there would be a queue lined up out the door but he was the first customer at KFC Gate Pa.
"It's good, it tastes reallynice," he said.
Mr Hewlett bought two Double Down burgers and a side of fries: "One for breakfast and one for lunch."
Patricia Rushton and her daughter Tessa were second in line to order after seeing the bunless burger on TV.
"We're here because we're curious and we'd like to know what it tastes like," Mrs Rushton said.
"I like the concept and I actually prefer it [without the buns]. I pull the burger to bits anyway and don't normally eat the bread ... "
Not long after, five men from Kongs NZ ventured from Tauriko in their morning break to try the new burger. Warehouse manager Clinton Farrell said the Double Down was delicious and it "definitely lived up to all the media hype".
Kongs employee Ben Van Der Salm said the Double Down burger was smaller than he expected but it tasted great. "I'd definitely get another one, I'd like to come back down at 2pm [on my afternoon break] and get another one."
