Bowls Tauranga South attracted a top field of 96 bowlers to the second annual Copper Crest Women's Invitation Pairs tournament that finished yesterday afternoon.

The high class greens and superb organisation makes the tournament one of the highlights on the women's bowls calendar, with teams entered from the Far North to Wellington - and one intrepid pair making the trip up from Invercargill.

Tauranga South's tournament controller Judith Payne says it has been a 12 month journey to organise the event but it all worked out well with a highly successful tournament.

"As far as an invitational event and inviting top bowlers from all over New Zealand and also Australia and Fiji when we can goes, it is an important event," she said.

"We are hoping it is going to be even bigger in the future and we hope to get more associate sponsors to help [with that]."

Frankton Junction bowlers Jenny Welch and Margaret Reed took out the major prize.

Welch says the high class competition, and how well run the tournament is, will keep her coming back to play.

"We tried our hardest every game we played and just tried to be in there, which obviously worked for us."

The Hamiltonians say their toughest game yesterday was against local Tauranga South pair of Mary Campbell and Robyn Davis.
