Tauranga Intermediate School principal Brian Diver has resigned.
Diver announced he was stepping down after more than two decades as principal of the school at a special assembly this afternoon.
The school's Board of Trustees chairperson Kiri Diamond said Diver was appointed principal in 1994 and said the news was not unexpected.
"By next year he would have been with the school for 25 years," she said. "It has been expected."
Diamond said Diver had been a huge part of the school.
"He is Tauranga Intermediate," she said.
"He has got children of students coming through now. He has been here for a couple of generations."
Diver helped to increase the school roll, established the Aims Games and much more while head of the intermediate school.
"He has made such a big impact on not only the school but the Tauranga community," Diamond said.
The principal's last day will be the end of Term 1 next year which Diamond said gave the school board plenty of time to fill the prestigious role.
"We are grateful to be given that much time to go through the process," she said. "It is one of the biggest jobs we have to do is appoint a principal, especially at Tauranga Intermediate which is one of the biggest intermediate schools."
