There have been at least four light earthquakes off the coast of White Island in less than 24 hours.
The first was at 9.27pm last night when a 2.8 magnitude earthquake occurred 5km north of the volcanic island.
This 11km deep earthquake was reported as light intensity by GeoNet.
At 1.16am GeoNet recorded a second earthquake, 2.5 in magnitude and 10km north-west of White Island.
At 12.21pm the third earthquake occurred, with a magnitude of 2.8 and 9km in depth.
This light earthquake was 10km north of the island.
The fourth earthquake at 2.01pm was the strongest, measuring 2.8 in magnitude, 10km north of White Island.
