Both women were taken to Tauranga Hospital, one suffering from a significant abdominal injury and the other suffering from a deep laceration.
Mr Campion said the head-on crash was one of eight collisions in the region over the weekend.
''Three involved alcohol but the majority of the crashes were at intersections,'' Mr Campion said.
''It's really important for people to take extra care around intersections. We tend to be over represented in intersetion crashes in the Western Bay of Plenty.
''We need to make sure people are choosing good gap selection.''
