Tauranga residents flocked to Gull Petrol Station on Hewletts Rd yesterday after the company dropped their prices as part of a promotion.
Local Don Mehana said he had made a special trip to Gull on Hewletts Rd to take advantage of the low prices.
"It's quite cheap here, I usually go to BP, but that's a bit dearer at the moment," Mr Mehana said.
Gull New Zealand dropped their prices around 10c per litre between 7am on November 26 to midday November 27.
The Bay of Plenty Times Weekend did an unofficial survey of 91 octane prices at selected petrol stations across Tauranga between 10.30am and 4pm yesterday.
Gull on Hewletts Rd had the lowest petrol price at $1.699 per litre, followed closely by BP Maunganui Rd and Caltex Girven Rd at $1.719 per litre.
Gull New Zealand general manager Dave Bodger said they had seen an increase in customers buying Gull fuel over the last couple of days.
"We've been very busy, people are always keen to get a good price," Mr Bodger said.
Mr Bodger said Gull's promotion period was to "add a little extra surprise and delight for Kiwi drivers".
"We know this time of year can put the pressure on many Kiwi families, so we are doing everything we can to help ease costs," he said.
The most expensive petrol prices the survey found was at Mobil Cameron Rd and Z Cameron Rd, both at $1.859.
The Bay of Plenty Times Weekend attempted to contact Mobil and Z spokespersons but had not yet received comment.
AA senior policy analyst and spokesman for petrol Mark Stockdale said that New Zealand has seen some "very, very low prices", including Gull's prices which were "around 40c below the national average".
"It's a huge discount. There are some low prices to be had in the Bay of Plenty," Mr Stockdale said.
Mr Stockdale recommended Tauranga residents keep an eye on petrol prices this summer.
"Particularly in the Bay of Plenty, there are going to be some low prices coming up and make sure you shop around," Mr Stockdale said.
The AA Petrolwatch survey at November 17 showed 91 octane's national average was $1.939 per litre.
The Bay of Plenty Times reported in August petrol prices in Tauranga were as high as $1.979 per litre.
