Tauranga kayaker Tim Taylor has today finally embarked on a world record attempt.
Mr Taylor, 28, was thwarted from starting the journey earlier this month due to poor weather conditions.
Mr Taylor originally planned to complete a gruelling 220km solo kayaking expedition, departing from Omaha Beach, north of Auckland, to paddle south to Tauranga.
However, he left from Pilot Bay instead at 8am today, heading north to take advantage of the expected southwest winds.
Mr Taylor will travel to Opito Bay in the Coromandel and then turn back to Tauranga in a 220km journey.
