Mount Maunganui couple Mitch Brady and Casey Waterhouse found a perfect way to celebrate Labour Day in the Western Bay.
They sat under the shade of the pohutukawa trees on Mount Drury, shared a lunch of sushi and watched revellers play on the sand and in the water in Shark Alley.
Casey, 19, said it was nice to have a day off and enjoy the warm weather.
"I haven't been up to much, just chilling and hanging out. It's nice the sun's come out today."
New Zealand was one of the first countries to have a Labour Day, which recognises the struggle for an eight-hour work day.
