Teacher and netball coach Angie Wihapi-Priest was delighted with new equipment, which arrived at the school this week.
"This is unbelievable. It's the first time ever netball goal posts have been at this school," Ms Wihapi-Priest said.
"Everyone's stoked, the kids are really happy they're able to play netball."
Of the 51 students at the school, 42 play competitively, she said.
The school's netball uniforms, unfitted green skirts with bibs that were more than 20 years old, were also upgraded to sleek green and white dresses with funds from the grant.
"When I started teaching here last year, no one played netball and the school had been out of the Te Puke competition for eight years. When I asked about uniforms, the principal said yes, they're in [the storeroom], and when I opened up the bag I thought oh my gosh, those are the uniforms I used to wear when I was a student here," she said.
Year 9 student Te Nga-Kauiti Biel was stoked with the new uniforms and said she was not ashamed to be seen playing any more.
"We were shy to go play out because everyone else had these flash uniforms and we had old ones. Now we've got big smiles and we're really happy because no one will be cheeky to us any more."
"We're just so happy, you can't take the smiles off our faces."
Former Silver Fern George visited the school and spent time playing netball games with the students.
She said the school was "very deserving" of the grant and she hoped to visit more schools which were as passionate about netball as Te Matai School.
ANZ Bay of Plenty regional manager Gavin McCormick said the school won the grant because it impressed selectors with its "huge passion for netball".
"They've not let anything get in the way of their enthusiasm, and have thought up creative ways to overcome what they don't have," he said.
"The school is obviously the heart of their community, as they managed to get 2399 votes for their application to the grant scheme. We wanted to reward the school's passion and hard work with goal posts and brand new kit," he said.
The other local ANZ Netball Grant Scheme winners were social netball team Green Ferns and netball club Tukahia, which both won $1000 grants.
The grants are part of $100,000 being awarded by ANZ to clubs, schools, fans and social teams from around the country.
Mr McCormick said there was still time to apply for a grant with applications open until June 17, 2012. Applications can be made online at www.anznetball.co.nz.
