Rugby with South American flair will come to Te Puke in March.

Three teams from Argentina's Hindu club will play their final matches of a three-centre Australasian tour against Te Puke Sports sides on March 6.

Hindu will bring a party of 90 to Te Puke including players, coaches and managers, as well as supporters.

The touring party will arrive in Te Puke on the day before the games, staying at the Papamoa Holiday Resort.

The exact times of the games has yet to be confirmed, but the match between the senior sides will be played under floodlights.

There will be a social gathering with meals available after the games.

Club president Ash Peat said the visit was a major logistical undertaking.

"However, we are proud to have been selected to play Hindu," he said.

The visitors will already have played Sydney University in Australia and North Shore's Waitemata in Auckland before arriving in Te Puke.

Peat said he was particularly pleased with the reaction of senior coach Craig Jeffries.

"Craig is keen to have his side compete against such a strong and successful club. He says that the game will be a great challenge prior to going into the first [Baywide] competition round a few weeks later.

"We will certainly be put to the test with the Hindu forwards reputed to be near international level."

With a large number of Argentineans working in the kiwifruit industry, Peat expects the visitors to have plenty of support.

"And we'd like to welcome as many as possible to the game and to socialise at the club afterwards. This will be a community event and everyone is welcome."

Although the name might seem strange, Hindu has a rich rugby history.

The senior side is described as being of NPC standard, with several current Pumas in the team. Each of the three teams has former Puma internationals as coaches.

In the 1910s, pupils of the La Salle college in Buenos Aires met to form a theatre group, then known as Hindustanicos.

In 1919 alumni founded a social, cultural and sporting venture known as the Hindu Club. Later the club bought an 83ha plot in Don Torcuato and started playing several sports, forming a rugby union team in 1935.

It is now recognised as one of the foremost rugby clubs in the country.

While the club is mostly known for its rugby teams and is a member of the Union de Rugby de Buenos Aires, it also hosts other activities such football, hockey, tennis, gymnastics, golf and bridge.

The club had to wait until 1996 to win its first national title but since then has won 16, making it a powerhouse of Argentine rugby.

Famous players include Argentina internationals Hernan Senillosa, Gonzalo Quesada, Nicolas Fernandez Miranda, Juan Fernandez Miranda, Lucas Ostiglia, Juan Ignacio Gauthier and Horacio Agulla.

Hindu's tour co-ordinator Antony Sinkovich said it was important to get a good balance between city and country sides. Te Puke Sports was ideally positioned, not only as a strong country club, but also Te Puke being the kiwifruit capital of the world was a major factor in deciding the location.
